County Sound Report 30th October 2007 - Bere Island

·        Bere Island Theatre Troupe will host the “Dark Horse in the Wind” tour featuring Mary McPartlan, Tommy Peoples, Steve Cooney and special guests at the Lecture Theatre on Saturday next 3rd November starting at 8pm. Admission is 8 euro for adults and 5euro for students and senior citizens. Ferry service from the Pontoon at 7pm and returning after the show. This tour is presented in association with the Arts Council and Cork County Council.

·        Bere Island Projects Group Ltd held their AGM on Wednesday last. Thank you to everyone who attended.

County Sound Report 23rd October 2007 - Bere Island

·        Bere Island Projects Group Ltd will also hold their AGM on Wednesday next 24th October at 8pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome to attend. BIPG held their elections on Friday last. The following were elected: Joanna Murphy, Pauline Hanley & Theresa Hall. Thank you to Helen Riddell, Maria Sullivan and Michael Harrington for their valuable contribution to the Projects Group over the last 3 years.

County Sound Report 16th October 2007 - Bere Island  

·        Bere Island Projects Group Ltd will hold their elections this coming Friday 19th October from 4:45pm – 9:15pm in the community centre. The following are the candidates you will be voting for on Friday: Pauline Hanley, Ardagh, Theresa Hall, Cloughland, Michael Harrington, Derrycreeveen, Joanna Murphy, Derrycreeveen and Helen Riddell, Rerrin. Please come along on the day and have your say.
Bere Island Projects Group Ltd will also hold their AGM on Wednesday next 24th October at 8pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome to attend.

·        Set dancing classes have commenced in the community centre on Monday evenings at 8pm. If you are interested in taking part please come along on the night or contact Joanna Murphy.

County Sound Report 9th October 2007 - Bere Island  

·        Tomorrow Wednesday 10th is the closing date for nominations for Bere Island Projects Group’s Elections. Maria Sullivan, Helen Riddell and Michael Harrington will be stepping down but are eligible for re election if nominated. The elections will be held on Friday 19th October from 4:15pm – 9:15pm in the community centre. Bere Island Projects Group will hold their AGM on Wednesday 24th October at 8pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome to attend.

·        Comhdhail Oileain na hEireann will hold an EGM on this Thursday 4th October at 10am in the Quality Hotel, Oranmore, Co. Galway. For more information contact the head office in Inis Óirr on 099 75096.

·        Congratulations and well done to Eileen Murphy, Derrycreeveen who took part in the Ladies Mini Marathon in Cork recently. Eileen ran the 5 mile run in 58 mins and raised €500 for the Simon Community. Eileen would like to thank all those who supported her.

·        Congratualtions to the community of Bere Island who won the Tidiest Island Award for the 1st time ever. A special word of congratulations to the Bere Island Tourist & Environmental Group who enter the competition every year, the Fás workers, the Rural Social Scheme workers and the islanders themselves for the effort put in.    

·        The refuse collection will be held on tomorrow Wednesday 12th. After this the collection will not be weekly and will be held on the following dates: 26th September, 10th October, 24th October, 7 November, 21 November, 5th December, 19th December, 2nd January & 16th January. ·        The Annual All Ireland Inter Island Competition was held last weekend in Aranmore. A large crowd travelled from Bere Island and we would like to congratulate the ladies and men from Inis Óirr who are this years champions.  

·        The Citizen’s Information Bureau will hold a clinic on Bere Island this Wednesday 12th September from 9:30am – 12 noon at the small office in the community centre. Anyone interested can come along and receive advice on rights and entitlements.  

·        Bere Island Community Childcare Group will hold their AGM on Monday 1st October at 7:30pm in the Community Centre. Everyone is welcome.   

·        Condolences to the family and friends of the late Éamon Orpen, Waterford and Bere Island who died last week. May he rest in peace.

·        Thank you to Claire Hedarman, Conservation and Wildlife Officer who held a walk & talk on the flora and fauna on Friday last as part of heritage week. A large group attended and it was much enjoyed.

County Sound Report 28th August 2007 - Bere Island  

·        Thank you to everyone who supported the Church Gate Collection on Sunday last. A total of 281 Euro was raised in aid of the Neuro Fibroma Tosis Association of Ireland. Your support is greatly appreciated.

·        Heritage Week is running from 25th – 31st August on Bere Island . Thank you to Susan Steele, Dawn Ely, Theresa Hall, Chris O’ Sullivan and Barry Hanley for leading the events already held on the island. Please note there will not be music in the Hotel on Thursday night next 30th August as previously advertised. Instead there will be a showing of Ed Whites films in the community centre at 7pm. A walk & talk on the flora and fauna of Bere Island by Claire Hedarman, Conservation and Wildlife Officer will be held on Friday next at 3pm. ·        Congratulations to Katie O’ Leary, Greenane on completing her training with the Naval Service. This was celebrated with her family at the passing out parade on Thursday last at Haulbowline, Cork . Katie is the 1st female from Bere Island to join the Naval Service and was the only girl in her class. We wish Katie the very best of luck for the future.   

·        This week we welcome Winnie Murphy, Ballinakilla to the post of Conservation Plan Development Worker. Winnie will be working on the implementation of the Bere Island Conservation Plan for the coming year and we wish her well with her new position.

County Sound Report 21st August 2007 - Bere Island

·        Congratulations to Tade Sullivan, Ballinakilla son of John and Bernadette Sullivan who graduated from Templemore on July 26th last. Tade is now stationed in Limerick and we wish him every success for the future.

County Sound Report 15th August 2007 - Bere Island  

·        There will be rosary at the Grotto on Wednesday evening 15th August at 7pm. (Weather permitting) Fr. Sean O’ Shea from Castletownbere will attend. Everyone is welcome.

·        The Annual Bere Island Festival took place over the weekend. The weather wasn’t the best but the festival was busy as usual. Events included the biathlon, (results will be put on the website in the coming days) swimming races, canoeing races, slippery pole and many more novelty events. Thank you to everyone who took part to make the festival a success especially the sponsors without whom the festival would not be possible.

·        The annual RNLI draw took place on Sunday night last. The winners were as follows:  1st prize City Jet Flights – James Sidley, 2nd prize City Jet Flights - Helen Riddell , 3rd prize City Jet Flights – Cathy & Tade Sullivan, 4th prize Hamper – Eileen Crowley, 5th prize Hamper – Tim & Theresa Brophy, 6th prize €25 Voucher – Theresa Sherwood, 7th prize €20 voucher – Tony Murphy, 8th prize 2 bottles of wine – Barry O’ Leary, 9th prize photo frame – Tony Kerns FCA & 10th prize photo frame – Tim & Theresa Brophy. Thank you to everyone who supported this draw and also those who sponsored prizes.   

County Sound Report 31st July 2007 - Bere Island  

·        The Annual Holy Year Cross Mass will be held at the Holy Year Cross on Sunday next 5th August at 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome. Ferry leaves town at 12:30pm.   

·        Well done to the Bere Island rowing club took part in the Kenmare Regatta last weekend and came second in their race. The club will take part in the Ahakista regatta on this coming Sunday 5th Aug and Castletownbere regatta on Monday next 6th August and we wish them the best of luck.

·        An information evening for those interested in the Old School Project will be held on Monday 13th August at 8:30pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome to come along.  

·        The Bere Island Regatta takes place from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th August. There is a full line up of events with music in the Hotel nightly. For more information please see posters locally.

County Sound Report 24th July 2007 - Bere Island  

The Annual Football Tournament takes place from Friday 7th – Sunday 9th September in Aranmore Island . Accommodation is limited on the island therefore only the teams will be travelling. Any team members who haven’t paid their deposits should do so before next weekend. Deposits can be paid to Mary Mullins or Bernie Orpen.  

Well done to the Bere Island rowing club took part in the Killarney Regatta last weekend and came fourth in their race. The club will take part in the Killarney regatta this Sunday, Ahakista regatta on Sunday 5th Aug and Castletownbere regatta on Monday 6th August and we wish them the best of luck.

·        Members of the Bere Island Active Retirement Group will have received information regarding an outing to Bantry on Friday 20th July. If you would like to go and have not given in your name please do so as soon as possible by contacting Bernie/ John on 75099.  The cost for is 10 Euro per person.

·        Bere Island Projects Group Ltd wish to recruit a full time Development Worker to implement the actions of the Bere Island Conservation Plan. For a recruitment pack or more information contact BIPG on 75099. The closing date for applications is tomorrow Wednesday 11th July at 4:30pm.

·        Congratulations and best wishes to Rita Sullivan, Ballinakilla, Bere Island and Victor Jennings, Leap who were married on Saturday last at St. Michael’s Church Bere Island . The ceremony was followed by a beautiful reception at the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry and they will spend their honeymoon in Italy . We wish them a happy and healthy life together and every good wish for the future.

·        A reminder that the Bere Island Active Retirement Group will be holding a social in The Look Out on Tuesday 10th July. The Adrigole Group will join them for the day. Dinner will be served at 1pm followed by music from Jerry Bruton in the Hotel. If you have not received the information and would like to attend or require transport please contact Bernie/ John on 75099. An outing to Bantry is also being organised for Friday 20th July. If you would like to go, again you can contact Bernie/ John on 75099. The cost for each event is 10 Euro per person.

·        Bere Island Projects Group Ltd wish to recruit a full time Development Worker to implement the following actions of the Bere Island Conservation Plan:1. Development of a heritage trail and booklet, 2. Carryout an inventory of artefacts in liaison with the Heritage Council, 3. Oversee and organise the natural and architectural surveys and safety audit on Lonehort Battery, 4. To advance the take up of the Island REPS and implement the farming survey, 5. Continue the work of the aquaculture group by supporting the group with funding applications to BIM and the foreshore licensing section. Candidates should have a good standard of development experience (voluntary/ paid), proven experience of facilitation and group work, experience of networking and liasing with voluntary, community and statutory agencies, ability to work on own initiative, understanding of island development issues, excellent IT and reporting skills, access to own transport. Candidates can only apply by completing a standard application form which is available from the staffing group on 027 75099. A CV can also be included. County Sound Report 26th June 2007 - Bere Island

·        Thanks to those who attended the informal sod turning ceremony at the Old School, Ballinakilla on Wednesday last. Nationwide filmed the event as well as interviewed people about the Tidy Islands competition. The programme is expected to air within the next month and will be advertised closer to the time.  

·        Volunteers are needed to help out with this years Festival. If you have any new ideas or are interested in helping contact Maria Sullivan on 75989 & Marie Orpen 75060. 

·        Best of luck to Laurence Walsh and Alan Harrington who left Bere Island on Thursday last to travel to Australia on a working holiday for 1 year. We hope they enjoy the experience and look forward to hearing from them.

·        An informal sod turning ceremony will take place at the Old School, Ballinakilla on tomorrow Wednesday 20th June at 12 noon with the children of St Michael’s National School . The ceremony is to mark the start of the construction work to the school. Everyone is welcome to come along.

·        Nationwide will be on the island tomorrow Wednesday 20th to film and interview some of those involved in the Tidy Islands Competition.

·        The Bere Island Festival Committee will meet this week to discuss the organisation of this years festival. If you have any new ideas or are interested in helping out contact Maria Sullivan on 75989 & Marie Orpen 75060.

·        A 40 hour Eucharistic Adoration to pray for the sick people of the Bere Island community will be held at St Michael’s Church, from 11th – 13th May. It will begin with Mass on Friday at 7pm and will end on Sunday at 12 noon following Mass. Anyone interested in participating can enrol at the back of the church.

·        Bere Island Projects Group are tendering for a qualified person to carryout minor repairs to the community centre. Please call John/Bernie for Details on 02775099.

County Sound Report 1st of May 2007 - Bere Island  

·        A 40 hour Eucharistic Adoration to pray for the sick people of the Bere Island community will be held at St Michael’s Church, from 11th – 13th May. It will begin with Mass on Friday at 7pm and will end on Sunday at 12 noon following Mass. Anyone interested in participating can enrol at the back of the church.

·        The Chemotherapy unit of Cork university hospital have expressed their thanks for the generous donation they received from Bere Island . The Holy Year Cross committee would like to thank all those who supported this cause by buying Christmas Cards or by giving to the collection at the annual mass at the cross.

·
