Get To Know Bere Island

Bere Island lies one mile offshore from the fishing port of Castletownbere, the deep yet sheltered stretch of water between the island and the mainland forming the spacious natural harbour of Berehaven. It is approximately 7 x 3 miles and has a population of 210. Bere Island has so much to offer it has to be seen to be believed. A must for a day trip visitor to see is the Martello Tower situated on Ardagh Hill, The Old Lighthouse, The Batteries and for those of you who might enjoy a stroll there’s the Beara Way Walk and a new cycling route which is guaranteed to take your breath away with the panoramic views of the island, Bantry Bay and the Slieve Miskish Mountains. And if the children get bored the Community Childcare facility will be more than delighted to accommodate them.
When you have all that done you can relax and enjoy a drink and craic in Dessie O’ Sullivan’s Bar, Rerrin Village or in the Hotel, Ballinakilla. In Kitty’s Café and Restaurant you can enjoy a snack or an evening meal in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.  With so much to offer on Bere Island it is of course essential to stay for the night and make the most of the high standard accommodation in the newly opened Admirals House Hostel. For the keen sailor there’s the Lawrence Cove Marina where you will be greeted with a warm welcome and be sure that your boat is safe while you avail of the services, which include showers, washing and drying machines and a craft shop.
The island of course would not be accessible without the two ferry operators, Colum Harrington, Bere Island Ferries and Patrick Murphy, Murphy's Ferry Service who both run very frequent and pleasant services. For a holiday never to be forgotten visit Bere Island.
