The community of Bere Island have decided to put this petition together in an effort to try and save the Post Office for the good of the local people.
All names received have been added and the petition is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who emailed or helped in anyway to put this petition together.

Comment: "I am writing on behalf of my dad, John Joe O'Sullivan, who relies so heavily on the post office that he doesn't even bother with email. John stays in touch with his brother Oliver, who lives on the island, via the post and it would be a great loss to them both were it to be discontinued".

____________

Dan Sullivan, 1927 Grant Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133
Comment: "I'd like to express my concern for the possible closure of the Post Office on Bere Island. Postal communication is both economically and socially vital for the health of the community. Should it be discontinued, it would be a crippling blow to the people of Bere Island. Please take into consideration both the young people who might be competing for jobs locally, and the elderly who look forward to hearing from distant loved ones. Moreover think of these elders who are not able to stroll down to the ferry (let alone in February) and spend their pension money going across to town for a letter that may not even be there. And of course there are the multitude of people and reasons between these two important, and very real, examples. Please remember the ramifications of your actions, and reconsider cutting off postal communication with the people of Bere Island.

Comment: "Bere Island Post Office is an integral and central service in the life of this Island Community. It is with horror and total disbelief that I heard of the threat to close this Vital Community Service. Can I urge the Minister and those concerned to stop before they damage the fragile fabric of this small and isolated Island Community. Mary Murphy and all the Murphy family have provided a wonderful service which went beyond the call of duty, to the local people. To close the Post Office would be akin to a kiss of death to the community, which has survived despite all the trajedies and hardships they have met. I am sure I echo the views and sentiments of those of us who are lucky enough to have a connection to this great place and its wonderful people".

Comment: " A rural community still needs Post Office, not just to receive mail, which is still the *only* avenue for such, but also as a hub for people to meet, discuss the latest local news and gossip, and in general preserve their local rural Island culture.   The Post master (or mistress) in a community knows a great deal of information about the local culture, people and so forth, which is never written down, but nevertheless, remains a vital (if unorthodox in the traditional sense) Tradition Bearer of the local corporate memory. Please keep this very important Post Office".

Comment: " As a frequent visitor I am completely opposed to the closure of Bere Island Post Office. The needsof the community of this island should be considered seriously since there is a deep body of sea water between the inhabitants and the mainland, where the nearest Post office is situated in Castletownbere. The value of the Post Office goes far beyond that of processing bill payments, postage, savings and social benefits, since the island people and visitors here both enjoy and benefit from the community connection, communication and support that makes it an integral part ofisland life. The modernisation of the Post Office processing would increase the volume and value of transactions and I do not believe that the costs involved would be in any way comparable for any modern business model".

Telephones and the internet have their place but they cannot provide a solution for every requirement; you cannot electronically "post" every letter nor can you get cash. There are quite enough insidious pressures on people today; plenty of reasons why they are driven apart and to lose the services of a Post Office will only add greatly to those malign influences and , therefore, should be resisted by every lawful means possible. Bere Island is a wonderful jewel in Ireland's west coast and Rerrin Post Office should be retained for both local inhabitants and the many visitors to the island".

Comments: "I detail below my name and address and wholeheartedly object to the closure of the Bere Island Post Office, this is a vital part of the community, providing a much needed service.  We regularly visit the Island and am absolutely astounded that such a decision has even been considered!  The Bere Island community need that service"!

Comment: " I am completely opposed to the closure of Bere Island Post Office. The needs of the community of this island should be considered seriously since there is a deep body of sea water between the inhabitants and the mainland, where the nearest Post Office is situated in Castletownbere.
The value of the POst Office goes far beyond that of processing bill payments, postage, savings and scoial benefits, since the island epople and visitors here both enjoy and benefit from the community connection, communication and support that makes it an integral part of island life.
The modernisation of the Post Office processing would increase the volume and value of transactions and I do not believe that the costs involved would be in any way comparable for any modern business model.

Comment: "I am a regular visitor to Bere Island. Amongst other reasons, I am attracted to the Island because of the unspoilt rugged countryside.  One of the reasons it has remained so unspoiled is because of the remoteness of the Island with only a ferry to gain access - no road bridges to bring lots of cars.  However, it is the remoteness of the Island that makes the Post Office such an important facility for residents & visitors alike.  To close the post office would be to deprive the local community & visitors of a very important service that, I assume would then only be available by taking a ferry journey across to the mainland – both expensive and possibly difficult for some of the Island’s elderly residents".

Comment: "As a frequent visitor to the Bere Island I have seen firsthand how valuable the post office is to the Island.  The people of Bere Island should not have to go to the Main Land for this service, money should be spent on the upgrade to allow the islanders to keep their independence"

Comment: "The loss of this Post Office would be detrimental to the Island and the tourism. A Post Office is a basic amenity that is required by all whom live and travel to the Island.  Are we going backwards in a world that is going forwards very fast!!!!!"
