News Report for December 8th 2009  

·        The annual Christmas shopping trip to Killarney will take place this Thursday 10th December. Cost is EURO 15. Booking is advised by contacting Laura on 027-75099

·        The Hotel is currently running a Christmas darts tournament. The final will be played on Saturday 19th December at 9pm followed by music. There will be music in the Hotel on New Years Eve with DJ Josie. Everyone welcome.

·        Bere Island Heritage Centre would like to say a massive cheery THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Christmas Fair on Sunday, we were absolutely thrilled with the turnout, it was a great day for the island. Thanks also to all who braved the choppy seas and stormy weather to come and see the Bere Island Troupe perform Beckett on Saturday, the support is hugely appreciated

·        The AGM for the Bere Island Festival takes place on Monday 14th November at 8pm in the community centre. Everyone is welcome to come along.

·        Harriet Roach a landscape gardener from the island will be running a Home Growing course in March, anyone interested should contact the Heritage centre on 75956.

·        The Heritage Centre invites you to discover Integrated Energy Therapy with Isabella Quill from Castletownbere on Saturday 12th December from 2-3pm in the beautiful and relaxing West Room at the Heritage Centre. Isabella is an Advanced practitioner of Integrated Therapy and she welcomes anyone who would like to try this hands on healing technique which is very effective at addressing stress related conditions, depression, anxiety and a range of emotional blockages.

·        Clare Hurley of the Cork Sports Partnership will be in the Heritage Centre this Wednesday 2nd December at 12noon. Her visit last week was very successful and we are delighted to invite her back again. All members of the Active Retirement Group are invited to come along. Lunch will be served after Clare’s workshop at a cost of EURO 7. If you would like to attend, contact Laura at the Projects Office on 027-75099.

·     The Bere Island Heritage Centre is holding a Christmas Fair on Sunday 6th December from 12pm to 3pm. Tables for sellers are now full, there will be crafts and cookery stalls, everyone is welcome.  This is a family day to indulge in some delicious treats and get all your gift shopping done in one go. There will be raffles, non alcoholic mulled wine, mince pies, Christmas music and lots of fun! If you are coming over from Castletownbere, the ferry leaves from outside Super Valu at 12.30, and returns at 2.30pm or 4.30pm, or from the Pontoon leaving at 1pm and returning at 2.30pm or 4.30pm. ·     The Bere Island Heritage Centre is holding a Contemporary Dance Class on Thursday at 7pm for children and 8pm for adults.

·     The Basketry Course for November with Lynn Kirkham is now full, but anyone interested in attending the next course can contact the Heritage Centre for dates on 75956.

·     Please come along and visit us at the 'Celebrating Cork's Past' Exhibition at the Millennium Hall, City Hall, Cork today, from 11am-7pm, admission is free.  We will have a large selection of historical documentation and photographs telling the story of Bere Island 's past.

·     Congratulations to Maria Sullivan and Tony Murphy who were married on Saturday last at St. Michaels Church Bere Island which was followed by a reception in The Westlodge Bantry where a great day and night was had by all. We would like to wish them the best of luck with their new life together.

·     A 10 week advanced computer class and a 10 week Farm Accounts class began last week. If you are interested in joining either class please contact the Projects Group Office on 75099 for more details as soon as possible.

Free fun crafts evening: An introduction to Willow Crafts, between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesday 13th October.  Lynn Kirkham will be giving a demonstration of Traditional Basket making and talking about growing and harvesting willow for crafts.  There will be baskets and other crafts on display and there will be a chance to have a go at making something small for yourself.  This is a family evening and all are welcome. News Report for September 29th 2009  

·     A 10 week advanced computer class begins this Thursday 1st October from 7 – 8:30pm at the community centre. Anyone interested in attending should contact the Projects Group to book a place. Cost is €50 payable before the course commences.

·     A 10 week farm accounts course will commence this coming Thursday 1st October from 8:30pm – 10pm at the community centre. Places are limited so booking is advised. A fee of €50 for the course is payable to Bere Island Projects Group before the course commences. For further details ring 75099.

·     Mary Lavelle, Development Officer for the Leader and LDSIP Programmes will visit Bere Island today Tuesday 29th September. If you have any ideas that may qualify for funding under these programmes and would like to meet Mary to discuss it further please contact the Project Group Office on 75099 to book an appointment. 

·     Well Done to Eileen Murphy who ran the Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon on Sunday last, for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Eileen improved on her last years time. A huge thanks to everyone who sponsored her. Over €450 was raised.

·     As part of National Trails day, on Sunday next 4th Oct, a guided walk will depart from Rerrin Post Office, Bere Island . The walk will be of 2 hour duration and explore historic sites on the east end of Bere Island . A ferry will depart the pontoon for Rerrin at 1 and return at 4.30 afterwards. Please wear suitable clothing and this walk is suitable for all ages. See you there

·     A coffee morning will be held in Cattapilla Café on Thursday next 17th September 2009 from 10:30am – 12:30pm in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation. A raffle will also be held and all donations would be greatly appreciated. Everyone is encouraged to come along and support. 

·     In the coming weeks treatment of Japanese Knotweed will begin. Japanese Knotweed is a highly invasive species. Treatment will involve spraying the plant intermittently for a period of at least 3 years. If anyone sees this plant anywhere they should contact Adrian on 75099. This project is funded by the Heritage Council under the Biodiversity fund 2009

·     The community of Bere Island have made every effort in keeping the island clean, tidy and looking its best even at the busiest of times when it wasn’t easy. Congratulations, your efforts have paid off as Bere Island has been awarded the Tidiest Island for 2009. Well done to all concerned.

·        A huge Thank You from Bere Island Heritage Centre to everyone who came to their Family Fun Day on Sat 22nd and thanks to all who donated to the day. Much appreciated by all the Heritage staff.

·        The Children's Art Competition on the day was won by Adam Walsh, Laura Walsh and Jack McGrath. Their budding talent was kindly displayed by Sarah Walker at her gallery during Heritage Week. Thank you to Sarah for donating her time and space. 

·        ''Guess the Weight'' Competition held at the Heritage Centre was won by Cormac Sidley. Thank you to Loop de Loop Castletownbere for donating the prize. 

·        The Heritage Centre has a great prize for the winner of the Quiz. Please hand in your completed quiz to the Heritage Centre as soon as possible.

News Report for August 25th 2009    

Ø      As part of Heritage Week an illustrated talk on Bats by Conor Kelleher will be held at the Heritage Centre at 7pm sharp this Thursday 27th August. Unfortunately the shore line walk due to be held on tomorrow Wednesday 26th has been cancelled.

 Ø      The Heritage Centre is looking for Home Bakers to supply homemade cakes, scones etc. and also any other products made on Bere Island for the Heritage Centre shop.

Ø      A visit to Collins Barracks Museum in Cork City has been suggested. This museum has a lot of interesting information on Bere Islands military past. Anyone who might be interested should contact 027 75099.

 Ø      There will be a local produce market (anything goes) on Sunday next 30th August at 12noon at the Heritage Centre. Price for sellers E5 per table, please call Theresa Hobbs on 086 1621803 to book your table.

News Report for August 18th 2009    

Ø  Bere Island Heritage Centre are having a family fun day to kick start the running of the Heritage Centre on Saturday next 22nd August, starting at 12 noon, with a BBQ, music, competitions, face painting, children’s games and a bouncy castle. This is also a great opportunity to browse the exhibition and offer your ideas for the centre so come along on the day.

Ø  The Heritage Centre is looking for Home Bakers to supply homemade cakes, scones etc. and also any other products made on Bere Island for the Heritage Centre shop. A weekly local produce market will be taking place at the centre starting on Sunday 30th August. Anyone who would like to hold a stall at the market please contact the Heritage Centre on 027 75956.

Ø  The Festival committee would like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported the Bere Island Festival 2009 which was a great success. Well done and thank you to all competitors in all events. Thanks also to everyone who supported the pub quiz to raise funds for the festival  and the draw in aid of the Life-boat which was held at the hotel on Sunday August 9th .

 

Ø  The heritage centre will open on the 22nd of August and have a number of events lined up for heritage week. Please see posters locally or call 75099.

 

Ø  Sports summer camp is on at the national school all this week and there are places available. Call 75099.

The following are the dates for their performances: August 15th features “The Tinker’s Curse” by Michael Harding and August 27th features “When I was God” by Conal Creedon. All performances start at 8pm at the Lecture Theatre and are part of the West Cork Fit up Festival Tour 2009. Tickets €7.50 per person (20 euro per family) available on the door.

Ø  Bere Island Projects Group received funding a few months ago to recruit workers under the Community Services Programme. These vacancies were advertised and the following people were recently selected following interview. Project Officer, Theresa Hobbs, Project Administrator, Geraldine O’ Sullivan and Caretaker, Thomas Olczak. Theresa and Thomas started work this week and Geraldine will join them in mid August. We wish them well in their positions.

News Report July 7th 2009

Ø  Bere Island Projects Group Ltd welcomes Adrian Moriarty who this week took over from Winnie Murphy as Development Worker for the Bere Island Conservation Plan. Adrian will be based at the small office in the community centre.

We say farewell to Sinead McMillan, Development Worker who is leaving us at the end of this week and heading to Canada . Sinead has worked on projects for Bere, Whiddy and Dursey Islands for over a year and a half and we wish her and her husband Jesse the best for the future. 

 

Ø  You will have noticed that the bottle banks were emptied last week at Oileain na gCaorach. The area is now clean and tidy and we ask everyone to make a conscious effort not to leave any materials or rubbish by the banks.

 

Ø  A reminder also that the Tidy Islands judge should be visiting very shortly if they haven’t already. You are asked to please make every effort to keep the island looking its best.

Ø  Thank you to everyone who participated in the fundraising Golf Classic held last weekend at the Berehaven Golf Club. A special word of thanks to the sponsors, organisers and teams who took part. Proceeds will go towards the GAA pitch & dressing room development and the Heritage Centre.

 

Ø  On Thursday last Mayor Noel Harrington visited the national school and crèche as his last official duty as Mayor. We would like to thank him for taking the time to visit the island and congratulate him for all his work as Mayor over the last year and for his work in raising the profile of the islands and the Beara Peninsula .

 

Ø  This week we bid farewell to Winnie Murphy, Development Worker for the Bere Island Conservation Plan who is leaving after 2 years. We would like to thank her for the work she has carried out and wish Winnie and Michael all the best for the future. We welcome Adrian Moriarty who will take over this position and wish him well in his new role.

Ø  You are invited to Waking the Hag a celebration of the Summer Solstice at the Whelyn Lodge Resort on Sunday next 21st June from 3 – 7pm. Artist Sean O’ Laoghaire has worked with many groups throughout the peninsula during his year as Beara Artist in Residence. This work can now be seen in its entirety, together with exhibitions, performances, face painting and fun for all the family. The celebration will finish with the Pageant: “Waking the Hag”.

Ø  The community of Bere Island are deeply saddened by the sudden death of local ferryman Patrick Murphy on Wednesday last. Patrick who operated Murphy’s Ferry was a happy, easy going man who always had a smile for those he met and always lent a hand to those in need. He was a great GAA man and played with Bere Island & UCC. He was known the length and breadth of the country and this was acknowledged by the large attendance at his funeral service.
We can only offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Carol, children Katie and David, brothers Ned & Brendan, sisters Nora, Sarah, Kitty and Mary, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and his many friends near and far. May he rest in peace.

Ø  The second Bere Island Country & Western Festival took place over the weekend and was again a great success. We would like to thank all those from the Island and the mainland who turned out in large numbers to support the event. There were plenty of events for both children and adults and bands including Robert Mizzell & the country Kings, Strictly cash, DJ JO Z, Gerry McCarthy, Brendan Finch and the Ted Dunne Country & Western Show who kept people entertained all night. Congratulations to Ger Brennan and Gerard Lowney who won prizes for best dressed cowboys on Friday and Saturday night. The committee would like to thank the Sponsors Larry O’ Rourke and Bere Island Ferries and would also like to thank all the people that donated spot prizes for the raffle.

 

Ø  We would like to wish Michael K. Sullivan, Ballinakilla, a safe journey back to New Zealand after his holidays on Bere Island . When he arrived he had 3 aims and that was to do the London Marathon, climb Hungary hill and jog around the Island and he was delighted to do all 3. Well done to him. While he was here he met his class mates, some he hadn’t met for 49 years and he also visited his old school, which is now the new heritage centre.

 

Ø  The annual Eucharistic procession will take place in St. Michaels Church Bere Island on next Sunday the 31st of May. Mass will be held in the graveyard (Weather permitting) at 11am followed by the procession. Ferry leaves the pontoon at 10am.

Ø  The “Lookout” Café will be open from Good Friday 10th April until Tuesday 14th April and every weekend after that until the end of May when it will open every day. Breakfast, lunch, early bird and evening menus will be served and a full wine list will be available. Book now to avoid disappointment.

 

Ø  Bere Island Tidy Islands Group would like all islanders to be vigilant and conscious of litter in their area and help ensure Bere Island wins the Tidy Islands Competition again in 2009

Ø  The new Heritage Centre has recently been completed and there will be open days on Sat 4th & Sun 5th April from 2pm to 4pm each day to give all islanders a chance to come and see it.

Ø  The Southern Islands , the HSE & Combat Poverty are holding a seminar on healthy islands at the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen on Tuesday 28th April at 11am. There will be guest speakers and workshops and an entertaining and stimulating day is guaranteed. Lunch will be served, to book please phone Bere Island Projects Group on 75099.

News Report for 24thth March 2009

Ø  Last Sat 20th March Dr. Henry Lyons and Dr. Susan Steele of the Marine Heritage Council gave a talk to a packed room in the new Heritage Centre on Bere Island on the uses of seaweed. There were many interesting business ideas suggested which could repay further investigation and a wide range of seaweed products were on display. At the end of the session there was a chance for everyone to experience the well known benefits of seaweed to the skin by trying out warm hand baths. Everyone agreed that the session was both enjoyable and informative and many thanks to both Henry and Susan for coming to the island to give the talk and to Winnie Murphy from Bere Island Projects Group who organised the day.

There will be an information day in the West Cork Hotel on 28th April from 11am to 4pm and the attendance on the day will include island residents from Bere, Cape, Sherkin, Heir, Long, Whiddy and Dursey. It is hoped to run an information exhibition alongside and tables will be provided by the hotel to display leaflets etc. Any organisation wishing to participate can contact Margaret O’Donovan on 028 40428

 

Ø  A workshop on seaweed will be held in the New Heritage Centre on Saturday 21st March. Dr Henry Lyons of Brandon Products Ltd. and Dr. Susan Steele of BIM will talk about the uses and value of seaweed. The workshop will run from 2.00 to 4.30. Everybody is welcome and we look forward to a good turnout on the day.

     The first will be on Thursday 26th February to Gougane Barra departing the

     from the ferry will be provided on request.

News Report for 13th January 2009

Ø  There will be an active retirement Group will meet at 12.30 in Kitty’s restaurant on January 20th 2009 for a planning meeting with Bridin Ashe.  The planning session will be followed by lunch.  Anyone interested in attending or who would like to be picked up should contact the Bere Island Projects Group Office.

Ø  Set dancing classes recommenced last night at the community centre

Ø  Sean O’Laoighire, the artist in residence will be on holidays until 26th of January.   The Bere Island Projects Group will not know until after that date whether there shall be a further artist in residency programme for 2009, but everyone who was involved in the programmes that ran before Christmas shall be contacted at that time to update them on the situation.
