News Report for December 20th 2016

The School Concert will be held at the Heritage Centre on Wednesday 21st December at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome.

The Bere Island Newsletter is currently on sale at Murphy’s Shop, The Projects Group Office and Super Valu Castletownbere. Cost is €5 each.

The Projects Group Office will close on Thursday next 22nd December and re open at 9am on Tuesday 3rd January 2017. The staff and management would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas & best wishes for 2017.

A Bere Island Festival public meeting will be held at the community centre on tomorrow Wednesday 19th October at 8pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to have your say in the 2017 festival.

Bere Island Projects Group will be publishing the Bere Island Christmas Newsletter in late November and are asking everyone to submit any news items from the past year.  Family items, on new babies, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and graduation etc, your favourite Christmas recipes, or stories of Christmases on Bere Island in days gone by are all welcome.  In order to have the newsletter printed in time for Christmas the deadline is Friday 21st October, all items must be received by this date.  Stories and photos can be emailed to Helen at bereconservation@gmail.com or dropped into the Project Group Office

Cork County Council are currently developing a transport study for Castletownbere to determine the transport interventions required to improve traffic and transport conditions in the town. Issues that will be addressed include traffic congestion, parking, traffic management, road safety, accessibility, public transport, walking and cycling. A public consultation exhibition will be held at the Beara Coast Hotel on today Tuesday 11th October from 4-8pm. Islanders are encouraged to attend.

Bere Island has won the Tidiest Island competition for the tenth year in a row in the Super Valu Tidy Towns competition 2016. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved what a great achievement.

There will be a walk to St Michael’s Well on Thursday next 29th September meeting at 12 noon opposite the standing stone.

The next Active Retirement Group coffee morning will be held at the community centre tomorrow Wednesday 28th September at 11am. Everyone is welcome.

News Report for June 14th 2016

We are delighted to say Bere Island has been crowned BioBlitz 2016 Champions recording a total of 1,178 species at the final count on Sunday last 12th June at the Heritage Centre. For the first time ever, the National Biodiversity Data Centre ran an exciting Island BioBlitz on five of Ireland’s off-shore islands Cape Clear, Bere Island, Inis Mór, Clare Island and Tory Island. The islands were competing in a race against time to see which island could record the most species over a 24 hour period from 11th – 12th June, 2016. In the run up to this we held a Wildlife Festival with guided nature walks, talks on beekeeping and whale and dolphin watching trips. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make these events so successful.

Congratulations and well done to Scoil Mhichil Naofa who won their match at the Sciath na Scol final in Clonakilty last Thursday. They did the island proud.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre will host the first ever Island BioBlitz on 11th and 12th June, when five of Ireland’s off-shore islands will compete in a race against time to see which island can record the most species over a 24 hour period.  Bere Island is one of the islands taking part, and in the week preceding the BioBlitz will hold a Wildlife Festival with guided nature walks, talks on beekeeping and whale and dolphin watching trips. For further details see www.bioblitz.ie

Clay and plaster workshops will be held on Bere Island over the next few days. Canadian based theatre company, Flush Ink Productions will perform A Rose Upon the Blood by Paddy Gillard-Bentley on Monday next May 16th at 7.30pm at the Bere Island Heritage Centre. The play tells the story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford, who were married hours before his execution in Kilmainham Gaol.  Admission is €10, a ferry will leave Castletownbere at 6.30pm and will return after the performance. Scoil Phobail Bheara will hold a 1916 Community Commemoration on 28th April at 7pm. Guest speakers include Gabriel Doherty, School of History UCC, Ted O’ Sullivan, Local Historian and Fachtna O’ Donovan, Beara Historical Society. The Beara Lifelong Learning Festival continues on Bere Island until Sunday next 17th April. Events include Grow you own Fruit & Veg, Get Your Boat ready for summer, Computer skills for farming & e-learning and an open day at Bere Island Heritage Centre. Registration for this year’s Darkness into Light Castletownbere will be held on Friday next 15th April from 9:30am – 1:30pm at Super Valu. Berehaven Red Cross will hold their annual fundraising walk on Saturday 9th April, starting at Ardgroom Post Office, and walking to Eyeries, Castletownbere, crossing over to Bere Island and walking the length of the island.  There will be stops for refreshments along the walk.  All funds raised during the walk will be used towards the maintenance of defibrillators throughout the Beara Peninsula.

A HSE consultation session will be held on Thursday 10th March at 12.30pm in the community centre. The aim of the meeting will be to discuss health issues affecting our island. Everyone is welcome.

Join our annual Bere Island Easter Meditation Retreat with Fr Laurence Freeman OSB and explore the mysteries of Easter. Sunday 20th March to Sunday 27th March 2015, Bere Island Heritage Centre. An interior pilgrimage of the Easter mysteries as they unfold in Holy Week. The retreat programme includes regular meditation periods, talks by Fr Laurence, the Easter liturgies with the island people and time for reading, walks and solitude.  All are welcome for all or part of the Retreat, those wishing to learn to meditate are especially welcome. Anyone interested in taking part in swimming lessons in Kealkil in the coming weeks should contact the office on 75099 to book a place.

A number of operation transformation activities are currently underway including walks/ run on Saturday at 9:30am, Sunday at 5pm, Tuesday at 7pm and Thursday at 2pm, spinning classes on Monday from 6:45pm, fitness class on Wednesday at 2pm and Thursday at 7pm and meditation on Wednesday at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to drop in to any of the events.

Condolences to the family of the late Chris Sullivan, Derrycreeveen who died last week. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends on Bere Island. May she rest in peace.

An information session will be held on Thursday next 21st January from 2 – 5:30pm at the community centre regarding grants available through the Warmer Homes Scheme. If you are interested in applying for a grant or want more information on what’s available come along on the day for a chat.
