News Report for Dec 18th 2012

The Christmas meal was held at the Hotel on Friday last followed by music from “One for the Road”. A very enjoyable night was had by all and sincere thank you to the Hotel for the lovely dinner and Tim for organising the event.
A big thank you to Santa who took time out of his busy schedule and visited the community centre on Sunday last. He was greeted by a big crowd of very excited children. After a large crowd again gathered at Rerrin Village for the choir singing and the turning on of the lights at the crib. An excellent afternoon and evening was had by all and thank you to everyone who helped out in any way to make it such a success.
The Bere Island Christmas Newsletter is now on sale in Murphy’s Shop, Bere Island and in Harrington’s and Loop de Loop in Castletownbere, price €3.  A big thank you to all those who contributed to the book.
Scoil Mhichíl Naofa will hold their school concert in the Heritage Centre at 6.30pm on tomorrow Wednesday December 19th. There will be Christmas carols, the Nativity, tin whistle, Irish dancing, a raffle and the Senior Room play. Everyone is welcome.
As this is the last report before Christmas we here in Bere Island would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and all the very best for 2013.

The Bere Island Active Retirement Group will have a get-together this Friday 16th November in Dessie’s Bar at 4pm. There’ll be music and soup and sandwiches.  For more details contact Tim on 027 75099.

Well done to Neasa Sullivan who won first prize in the Bere Island GAA Monster raffle held at the Hotel on Sunday 28th October last. 2nd prize of €200 went to Kevin Alcock Dublin and 3rd prize of €100 went to Aaron Tim, Cahermore. Well done to all other spot prize winners. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets supporting the club and a big thanks to all those who took the time to sell the tickets. A very special thanks to our anonymous donor for their generous contribution to the club of the prize money. The Beara Junior B Final was held in Cahermore on Saturday evening last. Unfortunately, Bere Island were defeated by Urhan with the final score line 1:11 to 1:03.

There will be an introductory talk by local beekeeper, Dr Jacqui Glisson, on Saturday 3rd November at 2pm at the Community Centre. Jacqui will outline what’s involved in becoming a beekeeper at this session, and for those interested in taking it further we will then organise a series of lectures on the theory of beekeeping for the winter months with the practical sessions taking place next Spring when the hives can be opened again. News report 2nd October 2012

As part of October Breast Cancer Month, a coffee morning and cake sale in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation will be held today Tuesday 2nd October at the Bere Island Heritage Centre from 11.30am.  A nurse from the Marie Keating Foundation will also be in attendance and will give a talk on cancer awareness, and will have ‘smokelysers’ for anyone wanting to give up smoking. Any baking donations for the event can be dropped into the Heritage Centre this morning. Marie Keating mobile Information Units travel countryside and are staffed with trained nurses providing cancer information and advice, free of charge, to thousands of men and women every year.
An art workshop weekend is being held on Bere Island from Friday 5th – Sunday 7th October 2012 and will be led by artist Philip O’Byrne who runs Frames Gallery in Douglas, Cork. Philip will guide workshop participants through appreciation of colour and composition and some basic art theory as they get to grips with painting in acrylics and oils. The course will take place in the Bere Island Heritage Centre, the cost is €110 per person which includes tea and coffee and all art materials. For further information contact Helen on 027 75099.

Bere Island has again won the Tidy Island competition for the 6th year in a row. The adjudicator was well impressed with our recycling centre which is the envy of many other communities. Well done to everyone for the effort put in during the year.

The Bere Island Heritage Centre is celebrating Heritage Week this week, with a family treasure hunt on Tuesday 21st August at 2.30pm, a guided walk to the Cloughland Martello Tower on Thursday 23rd August at 1.45pm and historic dvd footage being played all week at the Centre, our Emigration Exhibition is open alongside the Bere Island Experience Exhibition.

The draw for our big raffle will take place in the Hotel this Saturday night 25th August, there is still time to get your tickets and a chance to win one of the fabulous prizes.

News Report 14th August 2012
The annual Bere Island festival took place over the last week, from August 7th to 12th and again was a great success, with plenty of events to suit both young and old. The usual line up of events took place,
which included everything from a cookery demo, the annual festival quiz, the children’s biathlon, the children’s talent show and disco, the show had a wide range of talent among the young entertainers and there was a large line up for the audience which included a puppet show, Irish dancing, flute playing, piano playing and even a stand up comedian. On Friday afternoon the children’s sports was held in the GAA pitch and again the sun shone on the Island and this brought out huge crowds. The sports were followed by the annual Bere Island biathlon which started at Oileáin Na gCaorach and finished at Rerrin. Saturday consisted of various water sports including raft race, swimming, canoeing, greasy pole and pillow fights. Special thanks to the crew of the lifeboat for visiting the festival for the day and giving people a chance to view the boat. Every day finished with a musical event in Dessies and the Hotel and many great nights were had. The committee would like to thank all the sponsors who contribute to the festival every year, especially in the current economic climate we are all in and to all the volunteers who gave of their time throughout the weekend. They are also looking for volunteers to help plan for the festival for 2013, if you are interested please contact the office on 027 75099.

The annual RNLI raffle took place on Sunday night and the winners were, Olly Sullivan, Pat Lehane, Mark Sullivan, Molly Sullivan, Mary Orpen, Will Sullivan, Brenda K Sullivan, Jimmy Walsh, Barbie Shanahan, Laura Walsh, Mary Murphy, Sheila Walsh & Paul Cunningham. Congratulations to all. Thanks to all who donated prizes and supported ticket sales, a total of € 600 was raised for the lifeboat. Special thanks to Marie Orpen and Noreen Dennehy for organising the raffle.

Rosary will be held on Wednesday night August 15th at the Grotto at 8pm.

The Kids Summer Camp is on again today, tomorrow and Thursday, Children ages 6-12 will be at the GAA pitch and ages 4-6 at the Community Centre. Bere Island has a wide variety of activities taking place over the next week for the annual Bere Island Festival

On Tuesday 7th August there is a Seafood Cookery Demonstration by TV Chef Frank Moynihan at the Bere Island Heritage Centre. Contact 027 75956.

On Wednesday 8th August, there will be a Treasure Hunt at the Heritage Centre at 3pm, and later that evening the Annual Festival Fundraising Table Quiz takes place at the Hotel at 8pm.

Thursday 9th August sees the Children’s Biathlon starting at the Community Centre, Ballinakilla at 2pm, followed by the Kids Talent Show at the Hotel at 5pm. There will also be live music in Dessie’s Bar, Rerrin that evening with Gerry Bruton playing at 10pm.

On Friday 10th August Children’s Sports Day takes place at the football pitch, Rerrin, at 2pm, with the Adults Biathlon starting at Oilean na gCaorach at 7.30pm. There will be live music at 10pm that evening in the Hotel with ‘Something Simple.’

Saturday 11th August is the highlight of the festival with water sports taking place at the pier in Rerrin Village from 1pm. Events include, raft races, slippery pole, pillow fights, canoeing and swimming. Registration for the raft race must be before 2pm and life jackets must be worn for canoeing and raft races. There will be prize giving at Dessie’s bar at 5.30pm with live music from Dursey Sound in Dessie’s at 10pm that evening, and ‘Loose Connections’ will play in the Hotel at 10pm.

Also on Saturday 11th Blood in the Alley Theatre Productions will perform ‘Mimic’ at 8pm in the Lecture Theatre, Rerrin. A ferry will leave the pontoon at 7pm, returning at 1030pm.

The annual Graveyard Mass takes place at 10am on Sunday 12th August followed by the semis and final of the soccer tournament at 12pm at the Football pitch, with live music in Dessie’s at 2pm with Pat Higgins. ‘One for the Road’ will play in the Hotel at 10pm, with a raffle and draw in aid of the RNLI.

The second set of Bere Island Summer Camps are underway this week on 24th, 25th and 26th July. The camp is for children aged 6-12 and takes place at the GAA Pitch, Rerrin. News Report July 16th
Cork County council has not carried out any hedge cutting on the island in recent years, as with last year we are proposing to raise funds through the community and carry out the work ourselves. Any contribution, big or small is welcome. Donations can be made to the Projects Group Office by Friday 20th July 2012. If you do not want hedge cutting to be carried out on your property please contact the office on 027 75099.

There was a great turnout on last Saturday for the first ever Bere Island Midsummer Run, with over 80 runners taking part in the 5k and 10k road race. The winners of the 5k race were: Men’s 1st Aidan O’Shea, 2nd Fergus Rooney, 3rd Lawrence Walsh. Women’s 1st Orna O’Brien, 2nd Linda Ginty, 3rd Clare Murphy. Winners of the 10k race were Men’s 1st Gerry Kealy, 2nd Shane O’Mara, 3rd Alan Brett. Women’s 1st Geraldine O’Sullivan, 2nd E Lennon, 3rd Fiona Dukelow. A number of people also walked the 5k course. The Bere Island GAA Club would like to thank all those who took part and everyone who helped on the day.

The course is AAI licensed and measured with a Jones counter. This is the first road race on Bere Island. The entry fee is €20. Please note the race is not individually timed. There will be after race entertainment etc. Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, for Male & Female in both categories, Come along and enjoy the weekend and stay on the Island, please check out www.bereisland.net if you prefer walking you can also try out our 5K walk which is suitable for everyone. Entry for the walk will be taken on the day and special deals are available for families.

Congratulations to the winners of the Bere Island Photography Competition.  We had a great response to the competition which was held as part of the West Cork Islands’ Open weekend and some lovely photos submitted.  ~
The winners are: Over 16s 1st Eric Pollinger, 2nd Sile Byrne, 3rd John O’Sullivan. Under 16s 1st Ciara Carroll, 2nd Tom Willis, 3rd Orlaith Carroll. A big thank you to all our judges – Marie Orpen, Oliver Sullivan, Michael O’Sullivan and Derval O’Sullivan. Due to a number of requests we’ve decided to keep the Facebook page for the competition open, the name has now been changed to Bere Island Photos, please feel free to keep submitting photos of the island to share with everyone.
There will be a watercolour weekend workshop with Jenni White on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July at the Heritage Centre, exploring floral art incorporating colour and shadow, all aspects will be demonstrated by Jenni White in a relaxed and informal way. The Heritage Centre are looking for people who are interested in selling books of tickets. The books do not need to be bought in advance and anyone who sells a book of 10 tickets will get 2 free tickets to themselves to avail of the opportunity of winning one of these fabulous prizes: First prize of 1 weeks accommodation in a lovely Beach House in Stinson Beach, San Francisco, including $1000 spending money. The West Cork Islands Annual Open Weekend will be held this coming Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th June. So come to any of the West Cork Islands and enjoy the island experience at reduced rates on ferries, services, activities and accommodation. Activities to be held on Bere
Island include Sea Safari, guided walks, willow workshops and evening entertainment to mention just a few. So if you would like to know what it’s like to be an islander for a day hop on the ferry and come and see us.
Bere Island Theatre Troupe present “Betrayal” written and performed by Bill Griffin at The Lecture Hall on Saturday next 23rd June at 8pm. Admission €7 (not suitable for those under 14yrs). Ferry leaving the Pontoon at 7pm and returning at 10:30pm. For more information contact Helen on 027 75099.

The Emigration Exhibition opened on Friday last 15th June at the Heritage Centre, and will run till the end of August. The exhibition demonstrates how Bere Islanders settled into their new homes, and how to this day their descendants still maintain a strong allegiance
to their Island roots which is demonstrated by many coming to visit the island, travelling from the four corners of the world to see for themselves the island which their ancestors had to leave to seek a new life for their families. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the exhibition.

Just a reminder that the closing date for entries to the Bere Island Photography competition is Saturday next 16th June. So if you have any photographs of Bere Island, be it your favourite spot, a place that holds a particular memory, or an image which captures you at the spur of the moment please upload to the Bere Island Photo Competition Facebook page or email to bereislandphoto@gmail.com Please remember the competition is for amateur photographers only, a maximum of 3 photos per person can be submitted, and the subject matter of all photos must be Bere Island.  There are 2 categories, under 16s and over 16s. Winners will be announced during the Islands’ Open Weekend on Saturday 23rd June at 5pm in the Heritage Centre.
There will be a watercolour weekend workshop at the Heritage Centre with Jenni White on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July, exploring floral art incorporating colour and shadow, all aspects will be demonstrated by Jenni White in a relaxed and informal way. A public meeting will be held at the Heritage Centre on Saturday 2nd June at 3pm, by Rubicon Heritage in order to explain the upcoming ‘Bere Island Archaeology Project’. The meeting is to inform the community and any other interested individuals of their plans for this year and hopes for the future.
