News Report for December 8th 2015

Santa will visit the community centre on Sunday next 13th December at 3pm. This will be followed by the turning on of the lights and carol singing in Rerrin Village. Everyone welcome.

A screening of ‘A Turning Tide in the Life of Man’ will be held on Friday 11th December at 7pm in the Community Centre, Bere Island. The documentary follows John O’Brien, a fisherman from the island of Inihbofin.. He launched a European campaign to regain the islanders’ ancestors’ rights to fish in the seas around them. A ferry will leave Castletownbere at 6.30pm and return after the screening

You are invited to be part of an exciting project exploring the heritage of your Island through poetry and song-making. With the support of the following people Liz Clark: musician and song-making facilitator Tess Leak: artist and ‘haiku’ poetry facilitator (Museum of Miniature) Margaret Murphy: genealogy expert, Skibbereen Heritage Centre. Each group will have the opportunity to learn more about their local heritage, create a collection of ‘haiku’ poems and contribute to the making of an original song that links the Islands. There is a total of 3 workshops and the first one will be held on Friday November 27th at 12 at St. Michael’s National School. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks to Lieutenant Eoin Mackey and PO James Cleary from the Irish Navy who visited the school on Bere Island yesterday to present them with an Irish Flag as part of the Flags for Schools Initiative. Every school in Ireland will receive an Irish flag which will be raised on March 15th 2016 to commemorate the 1916 rising.

Bere Island has been awarded the Tidiest Island for 2015. Congratulations and well done to everyone who made this possible.

A walk will take place to St Michael’s Well on today Tuesday 29th September at 2.30pm. The meeting point for the walk is at the bottom of the road to the Holy Year Cross. Part of the walk is on rough terrain and suitable footwear is required.

It was a busy week on Bere Island, the 1st birthday of the Bere Island Parkrun was held on Saturday with 151 people participating. Well done to everyone who participated and volunteered to make it a great success.

Thanks to everyone who organised and attended the events held as part of Heritage Week.

The Music & Silence Festival was also held over the weekend. The weekend was enjoyed by all and thanks to everyone who attended and helped in any way.

Event:   A guided military history walk with local historian Barry Hanley around the eastern loop of Bere Island.

Event: Place name workshop. The Heritage Council are funding an update of the place name survey of Bere Island. This workshop will display the work carried out to date and allow people to contribute to the research.

Venue: Meet at Murphy’s Shop, Rerrin.
Event: A guided walk of Bere Island’s WW1 fortifications by islander Chris O’Sullivan, and walk around the perimeter of Lonehort Battery.

Venue: Community Centre, Ballinakilla
Event: A talk on the ‘Napoleonic era Defences of Bere Island by Damien Shiels, a conflict archaeologist with Rubicon Heritage.

Bere Island Project Group are proposing to carry out hedge cutting on the island as Cork County Council will not be doing it this year. We are asking for each household to make a donation towards the cost and any contribution however big or small will be welcome.
Donations can be sent to the Projects Group Office by Monday 27th July 2015.  In the event that there is insufficient funds to carryout hedge cutting on the entire island all donations will be returned therefore it is necessary to have all contributions made by this date in order to decide whether or not the job can commence. If you do not wish for hedge cutting to be carried out on any of your property please contact the Projects Group Office as soon as possible and before Monday 27th July.

The Museum of Miniature Exhibition in partnership with the West Cork Arts Centre will open on Bere Island on Friday July 17th at 6.30pm in the Drill Hall, Rerrin. The exhibition will also run on Saturday July 18th from 11am – 5pm and on Sunday July 19th from 11am to 2pm. The Museum of Miniature is curated by artists Marie Brett and Tess Leak with its inspiration drawn from the stories of the Borrowers and Gulliver’s Travels, antique toys and dollhouse furniture. A talk on the Beara Cycle Club and training for the Beara Charity Cycle will be held on Wednesday 24th June at 7pm in the Community Centre by Paul O’Shea and Vera O’Donovan.  The talk will also include information on training plans, nutrition and on cycling gear.  Everyone is welcome.

Tom Dickenson from TDK Gym in Castletownbere will be at the GAA pitch on Wednesday 24th June at 5.30pm to give a training session for anyone interested in doing the midsummer run or for anyone who does the park run or runs in general.  The session will last for one hour and all are welcome.  More sessions will be planned for the following week if there is an interest.

There will be a waste plastic collection at Donegan’s Plant Hire, Castletownbere on Wednesday June 24th from 9am – 5pm. A €12 cover charge will apply.

A nurse from the Marie Keating Foundation will hold a skin cancer awareness session on Monday June 22nd at 12 noon at the Bere Island Heritage Centre. A fundraising coffee morning and bake sale will also take place to raise funds for the Marie Keating Foundation. Cakes, scones etc. can be dropped off to the Heritage Centre on the morning of the event. A ferry leaves Castletownbere at 11:30am and will return at 2:30pm. For more information contact 75099.

As part of Bike Week, Bike N Beara will visit the school today June 16th. They will start with a bike check followed by a cycling lesson and an obstacle course. The children will then cycle to the Lookout café for a healthy snack and drinks. West Cork Islands Community Council will hold their AGM on Friday 26th June at 11am in the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry. All residents of the West Cork Islands of Sherkin, Bere, Cape Clear, Dursey, Heir, Long and Whiddy Islands are welcome to attend.

The West Cork Islands festival takes place this weekend 13th & 14th June. There is a full line up of things to do including guided walks, sea safari, guided historical bus trips and traditional music in the Heritage Centre featuring “Cuigear”. For more information contact BIPG on 75099.

Bere Island Projects Group Ltd will hold their elections on Friday 26th June at the community centre from 1pm – 3pm & 7:30pm – 9:30pm. There will be 3 places up for election as three members will be stepping down: Jackie Sullivan, John Mullins and Cormac Sidley. Nomination forms will issue to every household in the next week.

Bere Island Projects Group Ltd will hold their AGM on Thursday next 21st May at 9pm. This will be followed by a presentation of workplans for: Fás, RSS, Conservation Plan and BIPG’s draft 3 year workplan. Tea/ coffee and refreshments will be provided. Everyone is welcome.

A reminder there’s still time to book onto one of the workshops taking place this Tuesday and Wednesday: As part of the Museum of Miniature Exhibition which will take place on Bere Island in July, artist Tess Leak will hold two workshops where you will be assisted in creating a miniature doll/figure which will be displayed in the exhibition. The workshop will be held in the community centre on Tuesday 19th May from 7-9pm and Wednesday 20th May from 11am- 1pm. Materials will be provided but please bring along scraps of fabric, small beach-combed objects, needles & threads, wire, wool, shells and anything you wish to use to make a miniature figure. News Report for May 12th 2015

St Michael’s National School pupils Tadhg Hobbs and Luke Sidley will make their First Holy Communion this Sunday 17th May, we wish them both all the very best.

Forty five islanders travelled to Castletownbere in the early hours of last Saturday morning to take part in the Darkness into Light Walk in for Pieta House in aid of suicide awareness and self harm. Overall 400 took part in the 5k walk in Castletownbere.

Bere Island Active Retirement Group are invited to take part in
a Bealtaine get-together on Thursday May 14th at the Berehaven Holiday Resort. Registration is from 1pm, and lunch will be served at 1.30pm, followed by an afternoon of music, dancing, singing and a raffle. The cost is €20 per person, to book contact Tim on 75099.

A Health and Wellness event will take place after the parkrun this Saturday 16th May in the Bakehouse Cafe from 10:30am to 11am, participants will learn how they can optimise their performance and improve their health.

News Report for April 28th 2015

Bere Island Projects Group are conducting a review of the Conservation Plan as it is now over 10 years since it was first introduced, in order to see how it has worked so far and how we can plan for the future. Questionnaires have been given to all island residents. Completed questionnaires can be left in the box in Murphy’s Shop or handed into the office. The deadline for completing questionnaires is Tuesday 5th May.

Best of luck to the children of St Michael’s National School, Bere Island taking part in the Sciath na Scoil today in Bantry.

Thanks you to everyone who took part and sponsored the Berehaven Red Cross Annual Walk last Saturday from Ardgroom to Bere Island and back to Castletownbere. A total of €900 was raised on the day and will be used for defib maintenance and training.

News Report for April 21st 2015

There was great excitement on the island last Saturday when Olympic silver medallist John Treacy attended the local parkrun. Around 60 people turned out to welcome John on a sunny but breezy morning. Many thanks to John for taking the time out to visit and take part. The parkrun continues every Saturday morning at 9:30am and everyone is welcome to come along and join in for a walk/jog/run. Ferry leaves Castletownbere at 9am. Special ferry and bus package available for those travelling form the mainland. Booking is essential by contacting Colum on 086 2423140.

Bereheaven Red Cross Defibrillator Group will hold their annual sponsored walk on Saturday next 25th April. The walk will depart Ardgroom at 9am heading onto Eyeries, Castletownbere, Bere Island (west to east) and back to Castletownbere. Please come along on the day, your company and support would be much appreciated.

Cork County Council will hold an ‘Age Friendly Ireland’ consultation on Bere Island on Monday 13th April from 12-2pm at the Community Centre.  All are invited to come along and have their say for future plans to make Bere Island an age-friendly community which will benefit people of all ages. This includes ensuring there are adequate supports  in place to enhance the mobility and independence of both younger and older people with disabilities, and encouraging the participation of the older generation in volunteer work or civic activities. The Bere Island Heritage Centre is preparing an exhibition regarding the island’s rowing history, featuring Finbarr Murphy’s 1962 fibreglass gig.  The Heritage Centre are looking for any posters, photographs, medals, boat building tools or other memorabilia which can form part of the exhibition.  They are also looking for any stories regarding, regattas, gigs or rowing races.  For more details contact the Heritage Centre at 027 75956 or at biheritage@gmail.com

The Museum of Miniature are seeking submissions from island based artists as part of a ‘pop-up’ exhibition which will be staged on Bere Island in July 2015. Artists are invited to submit an artwork which fits into the palm of your hand. For further details contact 027 75099.

The annual Bere Island Easter Meditation Retreat with Fr Laurence Freeman OSB will take place from Sunday March 29th to Sunday April 5th at the Bere Island Heritage Centre.  The retreat programme includes regular meditation periods, talks by Fr Laurence, the Easter liturgies with the island people and time for reading, walks and solitude. Olympic runner John Treacy will be running in the Bere Island parkrun on Saturday 18th April at 9am. All are invited to take part in the parkrun that morning for the chance to run with an olympic runner and to give John a great Bere Island welcome.

Clare Lynch from the Department of Social Protection will be at the Bere Island Community Centre on Thursday 19th March 19th from 2-3pm to give a talk on new incentives for employers to hire staff.  Clare will also have information on the Back to Education and Back to Work schemes for people looking for work.

Congratulations to Rachel and Patrick Harrington, Lawrence Cove Marina, on the birth of their son Cillian Patrick, a brother for Abigail.

Congratulations to all the Bere Island Transformation Group who had their final weigh-in last Sunday, overall the group lost 8.5 stone between them. a celebratory party was held in the Community Centre to mark their achievement. Well done to all!

Drinagh Co-op will hold an information evening on Wednesday 28th Jan at 8pm in the Beara Bay, Castletownbere. Doors open at 7pm. Topics to be covered include “Feed & Nutrition” by Donal Murphy, Drinagh Feed Mill and Des Cronin Inform Nutrition and “GLAS & Farm payments” by Owen O’ Driscoll & Richard O’ Connell, Agri Environmental. The weekly Bere Island parkrun continues every Saturday at 9:30am and this year our parkrun is participating in the annual Operation Transformation Nationwide Walking event taking place this Saturday 17th January. Tune into the John Murray show on RTE Radio 1 at 9am on Thursday next where Bere lsland will feature as part of a series on islands.

The Bere Island Operation Transformation Group will hold a meeting tonight Tuesday 6th at 7pm in the community centre to plan for this years activities. The meeting is open to everyone so come along and take part.
