  • The Heritage Centre would like to thank everyone who has contributed to their Emigration from Bere Island stories and pictures for our upcoming Exhibition, please keep them coming to Helen Riddell.
  • The World Community for Christian Meditation will be holding a 10 day Silent Retreat from the 1st March and the annual Holy Week Retreat from the 1st  April, bookings are essential through Theresa Hobbs.

  • To begin this week we would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.
  • Deirdre and Eileen will no longer continue to run the weekly bingo. Anyone interested in taking over the running of the bingo can contact Eileen.
  • The Bere Island Heritage Centre would like to thank everyone who supported our table quiz in the Hotel on Friday 30th December; the night was a huge success. Weekly classes have resumed: Guitar lessons on Monday nights at 8pm, Meditation on Wednesdays at 7pm and Irish Dancing for children on Fridays at 4.30pm. The World Community for Christian Meditation will be holding a 10 day retreat from the 1st March and the annual Holy Week retreat from the 1st April, bookings through Theresa Hobbs. The Heritage Centre would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year as we look forward to another successful year.
  • Sympathy is extended to the family of the late John Walsh, Derrycreeveen who died recently.

News Report for December 20th 2011

  • Santa arrived in style at the BereIslandcommunity centre on Sunday last thanks to Theresa & Tyson. A big crowd of children were waiting anxiously to see Santa and receive their gifts and they were not disappointed. This was followed by the turning on of lights and Christmas carols at RerrinVillage. Thanks to everyone who helped out especially the man of the moment Santa who went down a big treat as usual.   
  • Bere Island Projects Group office will close on Friday next 23rd December at 12:30pm and will re open on Monday 9th January 2012. The management and staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  • Elections for the West Cork Islands Community Council were held last weekend. John Orpen and Colum Harrington were the 2 people elected as the BereIslandrepresentatives on the West Cork Islands Community Council.  
  • The Bere Island Christmas Newsletter has proved to be a huge success, and copies are flying off the shelves, there are still a few copies left and these can be purchased from Murphy’s Shop, BereIslandand Harrington’s Castletownbere. 
  • A church gate collection will take place on Sunday next 18th December in aid of Chernobyl Children. Please support.
  • Santa will be at the community centre on Sunday next at 3pm. This will be followed by the turning on of lights and Christmas carols at RerrinVillage. Everyone is welcome.

  • Elections for the West Cork Islands Community Council will be held this coming weekend. The following are the nominees who will stand for election on BereIsland: Colum Harrington, John Orpen, Geraldine O’ Sullivan and Lynn Kirkham. Each household on BereIslandshould by now have received information along with their ballot papers. You are asked to place an X in a maximum of 2 boxes to select the 2 representatives you would like to put forward for the Council. The ballot paper can then be placed in the box at the Heritage Centre on Saturday 10th December between 10am – 5pm or Sunday 11th December between 12pm – 3pm.  For more information contact the Projects Group Office on 75099.
  • The Bere Island Christmas Newsletter is now on sale in Murphy’s Shop, BereIslandand Harrington’s, Castletownbere. Cost 3euro each. Well done to everyone involved in putting this newsletter together.

  • The Bere Island Heritage Centre would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along on Sunday 4th December to support our Christmas Fair, the day went very well and we really appreciate your support to keep this island resource going. With crafts, knitwear, mulled wine, mince pies, Christmas carols, a raffle and face painting this is a family day to indulge in some delicious treats! Entertainment will be in the form of The Great Davido! – Master Clown – One Man Circus – World Record Plate Spinner!  With a warm Winter welcome to greet you at the Heritage Centre it will be a great afternoon to get all your Christmas shopping done in one go.   • A visit to Fort Camden in Crosshaven will be taking place next Monday 28th. The plan is to be there at 12pm on Monday. There is no bus arranged as yet as many are making their own way there but if you would like to visit this military site please give Geraldine a ring on 75099.
  • Birthday greetings to Laura Walsh, Ballinakilla who celebrated her birthday recently.
  • Michael McLoughlin of Bere Island died peacefully at Mary mount Hospice in CorkCityon Wednesday 16th November 2011. He was aged 77. A memorial will be held at the Bere Island Theatre Hall from 11am – 12 noon on Saturday next 26th November. All are welcome.

  • Bere Island nominations were received for the West Cork Islands Community Council on Saturday and Sunday last at the Heritage Centre.   • Bere Island households will receive information regarding the West Cork Islands Community Council this week. Nominations will be put forward on the island this Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th November at the Heritage Centre and voting will be carried out on each island on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December 2011.   • Congratulations to Sarah Crowley, Castletownbere and BereIslandwho recently retired from teaching at Beara CommunitySchool. Sarah was a popular teacher and will be missed by everyone. We wish Sarah and her husband Sean all the very best in their retirement.  
  • Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of the late Ted Harrington, Derrycreeveen who died recently at the age of 101. May he rest in peace.

We’re looking for any submissions, news items, photos, Christmas recipes and in particular memories of island Christmases throughout the years. The deadline for all submissions is this Friday 4th November.

  • An important IFA meeting will be held at the Park Hotel, Dunmanway on tonight Tuesday 25th October at 8pm sharp. Richard O’ Connell will be in attendance and a discussion will be held on the CAP reform. All IFA members are urged to make an effort to attend and if there is good interest a ferry will be hired to facilitate Bere Island IFA members. Contact Brenda on 75013 for more information.

The day is being facilitated by Jackie Gowran who is a business mentor for the West Cork Enterprise Board and has a lot of experience in supporting start up businesses and mentoring existing ones. The day will be covered by the media and it will be a great opportunity to promote your business. Your business will also get a one page profile to display on the day. If you have friends or family that would like to take part please invite them.
    The purpose of the day is to assist with:
    - A Discussion on developing an island economy
    - A Discussion on building the Brand of the West Cork Islands
    - Building a collective approach between business/residents and agencies
    - Showcasing Island businesses with a Bere Island stand
    - Learn new business ideas
    - Meet staff of support agencies for advice and network
    - Island Business People meeting and getting to know what they have to offer each other
    We will also have an open forum to develop some ideas together. Refreshments will be served. Activities for children can also be arranged. For more information on any of the above please contact 75099.

  • The next Beara Fest Social will take place on Wednesday 19th October from 12 – 4pm at the Maritime Hotel, Bantry. A bus will leave Castletownbere at 10:30am with registration at 12pm. Lunch will be provided followed by music to James Kelleher. Cost 15 euro per person. Member of the Bere Island Active Retirement Group can contact Tim on 75099 for more information or to book their place.

  • Congratulations and well done to Fuschia Beara made up of Joanna Murphy, Mary Sullivan and Pauline Hanley from Bere Island and Jacinta Dennison, Castletownbere who took part in An Jig Gig on TG4 on Sunday last. The ladies did a great performance of the Humours of Bandon so well done to all concerned.
  • An Energy meeting will be held this Wednesday 5th October at 8pm in the community centre. All are welcome.   • A massive congratulations to Bere Island for winning Tidiest Island for the FIFTH YEAR in a row! We gained an extra 4 points this year. A special thanks to all who took part in the  clean ups of the roads during the year and for all who contributed to the application processs. Thanks to Siobhan Sexton for helping us with our successful application.
  • A warm Welcome is extended to Tim Hanley, our new community development worker and to his daughter Molly who has joined Bere Island school. We wish Tim the very best during his time here and success in all his endeavours.

  • Thank you to everyone for supporting Heritage Week on Bere Island, and we look forward to organising even more activities next year.
  • The West Cork Fit Up Festival was a brilliant success this summer with a fantastic month of plays and also the magnificent performance of O’Sullivan-Beara by Aidan Dooley in July. Bere Island Troupe would like to thank everyone for supporting our theatre on Bere Island.
  • Pre school starts this Thursday Sep 1st at the community centre on Bere Island. We look forward to welcoming the children and hope they have a very happy and safe pre school year.
  • The Bere Island Heritage Centre will be hosting a watercolour workshop with Jenni White on the 3rd and 4th September, please call 027 75956 for details.

  • Heritage Week continues this week with a Treasure Hunt for children, guided walks to the Lighthouse and Martello Towers, a Maureen O’Hara movie night and a basket making workshop with Lynn Kirkham. All happening at the Bere Island Heritage Centre. Contact  75956 for more details.
  • The last play of the summer from the West Cork Fit Up Festival is on this Saturday 27th at the Lecture Hall on Bere Island with a late return ferry to the Pontoon. Come and join Bere Island Troupe for one more exciting performance and a drink in Dessies bar before you go home. Sincere thank you to everyone for supporting the theatre on Bere Island.   • Bere Island Summer camps were a great success this year and very well organised by Siobhan Sexton. Siobhan has completed her community development work with Bere Island Projects Group and we wish her every success and hope to see her on the island again in the near future.

  • On Sunday July 31st, (Bank Holiday Weekend) the annual Holy Year Cross Mass will be held on Bere Island at 1:30pm. Everyone welcome and we look forward to seeing you. The ferry leaves Castletownbere at 12:30pm.
  • A memorial stone will be unveiled and blessed at the graveyard mass on August 7th to remember all the children buried in the Cilleenach on Bere Island. All welcome.
