Bere
Island
- The
lights were turned on at the crib in the village on Sunday last by the choir
who sang beautiful Christmas carols. Thanks to the choir and all who joined
in and made it an enjoyable evening. A special word of thanks to Edel Murphy
and everyone who helped put the crib up.
- Santa
called to the community centre last Sunday and was greeted by a big crowd of
children and their families to receive lots of nice presents. Thanks to
everyone who helped organise this special occasion especially Ann Marie
Sullivan & Edel Murphy for beautifully decorating Santa’s Grotto. A
special word of thanks to Santa for visiting at this busy time and his
helpers Bernadette and Ann Marie.
- A

- Sympathy
is extended to the family of the late Kathleen Harrington, Derrycreeveen who
died last week. May she rest in peace.
- Congratulations

birthday on Saturday night last at the Hotel. Thank you to everyone at the
Hotel for holding what was a great night.

reminder that today is the deadline for submission of tenders to the Bere
Island Waste Management Group for the refuse and recycling service. Please

book of island women’s writings is being compiled for publication in

One story or a piece of prose or, two to three poems will be accepted from
each writer, on any subject matter. Submissions are welcome from women born
on or living permanently on
Irish
Islands
and should be made no later than Monday next 11th December 06.

Islay
in
Scotland
last week to the final conference of the European Small Islands Network.
There was 170 Islanders attended from 9 countries. Minister Éamon O’ Cuív
addressed the conference and outlined the work of the
Islands
division of the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Various
workshops were held and the Bere Island Conservation Plan was given as a
best practice example for sustainable
Island
development. Comhdhail Oileain Na hEireann were the lead partner in this
project which carried out 18 studies under 3 themes.

you are probably aware BIPG are putting a new work plan together to submit
to the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. We would like
to thank everyone who attended the open day on Thursday last at Kitty’s
Café & the Hotel. The work plan will be compiled within the next few
weeks and we will display it for everyone to see. This will be advertised
closer to the time.

Enright will attend the community centre on Saturday evening next 11th
November from 7pm and will give a talk on Padre Pio. Everyone is welcome to
come along.

Island Projects Group are currently compiling a work plan for 2007 – 2009
which will be submitted to the Department of Community, Rural &
Gaeltacht Affairs. All groups on the island have by now received letters
inviting them to an open day on Thursday next from 10 – 1pm in Kitty’s
Café and from 2 – 4pm in the Hotel. It is important that as many people
as possible attend and contribute to the next work plan. For more
information or if you are unable to attend but would like to include pieces
of work please contact Bernie/ John on 75099.

dancing is currently being held every Monday evening at the community centre
at 8pm. Anyone interested in taking part can come along on the night.
- Bere
Island Projects Group held their elections on Friday last at the community
centre. John Orpen, Derrycreeveen, Brendan Murphy, Rerrin & Marie Orpen,
Ballinakilla were elected to the committee. There were also 2 extra ballots
regarding a name change for the Projects Group and attendance at meetings.
The result showed the community did not want the name changed but would like
to see attendance records kept for each member. This will commence from the
Projects Group’s next committee meeting which will be held in November. We
would like to thank everyone who voted on the day and had their say.

interested in joining the Rural Social Scheme are asked to contact the
Projects Group Office before tomorrow Wednesday 25th for more
information.

travelled to Carlow last weekend for the Pride of Place awards ceremony.
Bere
Island
were nominated by Cork County Council but unfortunately were unsuccessful.
We would like to thank Cork County Council in particular McDara O’ Hici
for their help over the past few months. We also pass on our congratulations
to Clonakilty who won in their category.

Island Projects Group’s elections will take place on Friday 20th
October from 4:45 – 9:15pm at the community centre. John Orpen, Colum
Harrington, Lorraine Harrington, Marie Orpen and Brendan Murphy are the

Monday 16th October. David Andrews is the only nomination for the
ferry monitoring committee therefore he will automatically fill this place
and there will be no election for the ferry monitoring committee.

on tomorrow 13th of September. The seminar is being held to give
people living on the

an opportunity to participate in this important subject for Islanders. The
speakers include experts on renewable energy on the Danish and
Scottish
Islands
. A member of sustainable energy
Ireland
will also give a talk on the funding available from the Irish Government for
renewable energy projects. The seminar will be opened by Mairéad O’
Reilly, Comhdhail Oileain Na hEireann at 9.45. The seminar is open to anyone
with an interest in renewable energy on

Look Out Bistro will be closed on tomorrow Wednesday 13th
September and will re open on Thursday 14th September.

Jacqui Glisson, North Road Castletownbere will hold her next

note that from then on all

Island
clinics will be held on the 1st Tuesday of the month instead of
the 1st Wednesday of the month on a turn up and wait basis as
before.

will be a fundraising night in the hotel next Saturday night the 9th
of September in aid of St. Michael’s boat club. There will be a raffle
with first prize being a 2 night break in the
Rochestown
Park
hotel with dinner included. Music will be by Martin O’ Reilly. You can
sign up on the night to become a member of the boat club at an annual cost
of 20 euro for over 18 and 10 euro for under 18.The “name the gig”
competition winner will also be announced on the night, so come along for a
great night’s entertainment and celebrate with the junior ladies crew who
won the junior ladies title in the Castletownbere regatta.

of September between 4 and 7pm, to meet individuals and groups who would
like to take part in the development of this plan. She will also hold a
community discussion in the community centre at 8.30 that night and everyone

Week was held over the weekend on
Bere
Island
. Thank you to everyone who participated especially Claire Hedarman,
Conservation & Wildlife Officer for her walk and talk on the flora &
fauna, Susan Steele, BIM for her shore exploration walk and arts &
crafts, Ann Marie Harrington for helping with the Arts &Crafts, Ted
Sullivan for his talk on the military influence on Bantry Bay and Helen
Riddell, for her display of old photos.
- Thank
you to everyone who supported the church gate collection on Sunday last. EUR
265 was raised in aid of The Neuro Fibroma-tosis Association of Ireland.

Week takes place from 25th – 27th August 06 on

. At 2pm on Friday a walk and talk on the flora and fauna of
Bere
Island
will be held by Claire Hedarman, Conservation & Wildlife Officer. (Please
meet at 1:45pm at the community centre). At 12 noon Saturday Susan
Steele, BIM will take the children on a shore exploration. This will be
followed by Arts & Crafts in the community centre. (Please
meet at the community centre at 11:45am and bring a packed lunch). Sunday
will wind up with a talk by Ted Sullivan at 2pm on the American Military
Influence in Bantry Bay with a display of old photos by Helen Riddell in the
community centre.

- The
Annual Bere Island Festival took place over the weekend and was a huge
success. With plenty of fine weather the crowds were superb and took part in
all the varied events. As we can’t mention everyone we would like to thank
all those who took part in the events, the sponsors (without whom it would
not be possible), Teddy Black our fun MC and everyone who helped in
organising the weekend and made it a memorable one. Well done to all.
- Rosary
will be held at the Grotto tonight Tuesday 15th August at 8:30pm.

- Congratulations
to the Bere Island Ladies with Cox John Orpen who came first in the Junior
Rowing Race in Castletownbere Regatta yesterday. It was great to see the
ladies do so well as they only started rowing a few weeks ago.Well done and
best of luck in Kenmare at the end of the month.
- The
Bere Island Festival takes place on Friday 11th – Sunday 13th
August. A full line of events kick off Friday with the Annual Sport’s Day,
Kiddies Disco, Biathlon and the Island Vision Song Contest. Hopefully by now
everyone has a song prepared!! Saturday will be a bit wetter (hopefully not
the weather!!) with the Raft Races, Canoeing, Swimming, Slippery Pole and
Pillow Fights. The prize giving will then be held and the night will end
with music by Murphy’s Men. Then to Sunday where the Annual Graveyard Mass
will take place at 11am. Novelty events including, wellie throwing, bouncing
castle, bungee run, 5 a side football and Tug O War will be held at the Rec
and the festival will wind up on Sunday night with music and a monster

- The
refuse collection is now carried out weekly on Monday. Stickers must be put
on each bag and can be purchased at the community centre or Murphy’s Shop
for EURO 6 each. Please keep bags as light as possible (max 10 kgs per bag)
as they are handled a number of times. If bags are too heavy they will be
left behind.
- The
Annual Holy Year Cross Mass will take place on Sunday next 6th
August (Bank Holiday weekend) at 1:30pm. We look forward to seeing a lot of
Beara people participating at the ceremony. Ferry leaves Castletownbere at
12:30pm Cars can be driven to the Cross.

week the East Cork Radio Group and Bristol Contest Group travelled to the
island for the 3rd year to take part in the World Ham Radio
Competition. You might remember last year they were also here and stationed
at the
Martello
Tower
where they came 5th in the world in this competition. We won’t
know for a few months how they got on but wish them luck with the results.
- The
Bere Island Festival takes place on Friday 11th – Sunday 13th
August. A full line of events kick off Friday with the Annual Sport’s Day,
Kiddies Disco, Biathlon and the Island Vision Song Contest. Hopefully by now
everyone has a song prepared!! Saturday will be a bit wetter (hopefully not
the weather!!) with the Raft Races, Canoeing, Swimming, Slippery Pole and
Pillow Fights. The prize giving will then be held and the night will end
with music by Murphy’s Men. Then to Sunday where the Annual Graveyard Mass
will take place at 11am. Novelty events including, wellie throwing, bouncing
castle, bungee run, 5 a side football and Tug O War will be held at the Rec
and the festival will wind up on Sunday night with music and a monster
raffle in aid of the RNLI. We hope you enjoy the weekend and if you

in April. The course will be Fetac accredited and will be held weekly on
