Bere Island Events 2017

Saturday 1st July – Sunday 2nd July
US Navy on Bere Island Centenary Event
Throughout the weekend an exhibition of photographs of the US Navy on Bere Island will take place in the Bere Island Heritage Centre.

Saturday 1st July:
2.30pm at the Heritage Centre
Military historian and conflict archaeologist Damien Shiels will give a talk on the presence of the US Navy in Cork in 1917.  Free event.

6.30pm at the Heritage Centre
Island historian Ted Sullivan will give a talk on the US Navy presence on Bere Island and the impact on island life.  Free event.

8.30pm at the Heritage Centre
Cuigear – an evening of traditional Irish music and song.  Admission €5.

 

Sunday 2nd July:
11.30am meet outside Murphy’s Shop, Rerrin 

Guided walk with island historian Barry Hanley around Bere Island’s military fortifications.  Free event

Saturday 8th July
Bere Island Midsummer Run
5k race starts at 1.00pm, 10k race starts at 1.10pm
A 5km and 10km road race, around an AAI registered course on the eastern end of Bere Island. Registration can be done online or on the day, €20 for the adult race, or €5 for walkers. An underage fun-run will also take place.  For further details see Bere Island Midsummer Run Facebook page.

Children’s Summer Camp
For age groups 6 years to 16.   Activities to include arts and crafts, sports and seashore activities. Prices are €5 per child per day, and €12 for a family of three per day.  To book contact Tim 027 75099.

Monday 17th July – Saturday 22nd July
Swim Week hosted by Irish Water Safety
Includes swimming lessons, lifesaving, water confidence and water safety.

Monday 31st July – Friday 4th August
Sailing Week

Hosted by Bere Island Water Sports Club. For further details see the Club’s Facebook page. NB Sailing week is now fully booked.

A full programme of events will be announced shortly, and will include regular events such as the Children’s Sports Day, Adults and Children’s Biathlon, Children’s Talent contest and watersports events including the raft race, kayaking, swimming competition etc.

Illustrated talk on beekeeping with island beekeeper Barry Hanley.

Guided walk around Bere Island’s WW1 military fortifications with islander Chris Sullivan.  Free event.

Saturday 26th August: 2.00pm Lecture Theatre, Rerrin
Turf Projects – art project exploring the unique colour palette of the Bere Island landscape. Free event.

Saturday 26th August: 7.30pm Lecture Theatre, Rerrin
The Moon from Bere Island. Illustrated talk and moon viewing with the Cork Astronomy Club. Free event.
