St Michael is Bere Island’s patron saint, his feast day falls on 29th September. Legend has it that a sailor who was blinded at sea dreamed he would be cured when his ship reached land. On arriving in Beara, he described the place he had seen in his dream and was led to the well on Bere Island, where he was cured after washing his eyes with its water.
